José Manuel Rodríguez: Being here is the way to differentiate ourselves in such a global world
04/03/2022
The Ribeira Sacra wine center hosted this Friday the awards ceremony of the latest edition of the Mondial des Vins Extremes. Representatives of the award-winning wineries, members of the C.R.D.O.R.S. and a representation of the municipalities of the Denomination whose wineries received an award, Sober, Pantón, Chantada, A Pobra do Brollón and Monforte de Lemos.
The president of the C.R.D.O.R.S., José Manuel Rodríguez, reviewed the history of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra in this contest and hoped to continue gradually recovering normality, “The fact that we continue to participate in these tastings is one of the things that differentiates us from other wine-growing areas. We must remember Suso Conde and Suso Verao who went to collect the awards in Aosta almost 30 years ago. Being here is the way we differentiate ourselves in such a global world. After these two years it seems that this is clearing up and that we are going to be able to recover all those appointments that bring us together”.
D.O. Ribeira Sacra presented this year 53 samples, 44 reds and 9 whites, belonging to 27 wineries and obtained 21 medals, 14 gold and 7 silver.

Mondial des Vins Extrêmes, organized by
CERVIM, is the most important oenological competition, reserved for wines produced in mountain regions or from extreme cultivation: altitude greater than 500 metres, land slope greater than 30% (in areas of the DO Ribeira Sacra reaches 80%) or vineyard cultivation systems on terraces. D.O. Ribeira Sacra is one of the world's greatest exponents of this type of viticulture, which is now known as heroic viticulture.
CERVIM seeks to value the oenological production of these lands that are characterized by structural difficulties, but also by unique wines that have an extraordinary personality. Its objective is to emphasize the unique characteristics of these wines and to make consumers aware of the cultural aspects of mountain viticulture and the valuable work that winegrowers do to enhance the value of the territory.
