Official Start of the Harvest in the Ribeira Sacra D.O.

24/09/2024

Yesterday, September 23rd, the grape harvest in the Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin officially began, as determined by the Plenary Session of the Consello Regulador, based on the ripeness controls carried out by the technical staff of the Consello. This year, local winemakers have highlighted the excellent condition of the grapes, which promises a high-quality harvest.

Although the designated date was September 23rd, some winegrowers and wineries had already started harvesting earlier. Since the beginning of the campaign, 2,097,375 kilos of grapes have already been collected, according to the data as of September 23rd. Of these, 1,204,626 kilos correspond to Mencía grapes, with Godello being the second most harvested variety with 643,379 kilos. Other notable varieties harvested so far, listed by amount collected, include Merenzao, Albariño, Treixadura, and Garnacha. All of these have shown excellent ripeness, confirming expectations for high-quality wines.

The grape harvest in the D.O. Ribeira Sacra is a key moment, not only due to the wine-making tradition but also for the impact it has on the local economy. Work in the wineries will continue over the coming weeks as winegrowers take advantage of weather conditions to harvest the fruit at the perfect point of ripeness.

The Consello Regulador will continue monitoring the process to ensure that the high standards of quality, characteristic of wines from this Designation of Origin, are maintained.
