Aim: to improve the management of potential vineyard production

Autonomous reservation of rights of vineyard plantations in Galicia

05/02/2009

The Environment Council has passed a decree concerning the autonomous reservation of rights of vineyard plantations in Galicia. The reservation will consist of the
rights of abandoned vineyards and those not being used by their titled owners. The rights of the vineyards that come under this reservation will be managed by the Xunta (Galician government) and they will be assigned to land dedicated to the production of wine with a D.O. or an Identified Geographical Protected Area. The
rights of the vineyards will be granted by public meeting, with priority being given to young workers, agriculturalists, women, members of agricultural cooperatives, or
to vineyards dedicated to organic production.

The aim of this Galician reservation of vineyard rights is to improve the management of potential vineyard production, to avoid the loss of potential vine producing areas and to favour the appropriate use of the rights amongst the applicants.
