The D.O. Ribeira Sacra held its qualification tastings for the 2011 harvest today. The tastings took place at the Parador de Turismo de Monforte in the subregion of Amandi. The tasting panel consisted of 9 tasters who evaluated 10 samples of wine, 2 from each subregion, with both big and small bodegas being represented as well as both bottled wines and wines still in the vats. The harvest was rated as VERY GOOD, with 7.5 points being awarded.
Some of the tasters gave the following evaluations:
??These wines are very representative of the area, very clean wines, that in a few months will develop into more rounded wines?. (Iria Otero Mazó, member of the Asociación de Sumilleres Gallaecia)
??Some of the wines still need time to develop further, you have to take into account that some of the samples were still in vats, but they are wines of a very good class and flavour. I would give an evaluation between 7.5 and 8.5?. (Waldo Carreiras Albo, Head of Área de Industrias
Agrarias)
??They are wines with a good bouquet and intensity, wines which are intense on the palate. Last year we talked about wines which were quite homogeneous, with evaluations very similar between the samples, I think that the 2011 harvest is even more homogeneous, it appears that the region has found its type of wine. This is normally a process that is very slow and the Ribeira Sacra is evolving in the right direction. ?. (José Luis Hernáez Mañas, wine expert)
The harvests of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra have for several years now been given a rating of VERY GOOD. The year 2011 was a great harvest for the Denominación because it was the biggest harvest in its history and because it lived up to the levels of quality that were expected during the grape harvest. The coming year will show if the customers continue their interest in Ribeira Sacra wines as they have up until now.
