Interviewing part of the Tasting Panel of the XXV Tasting of the Wines of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra

08/07/2019

In the XXV Wine Tasting of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra we interviewed some of the members of the tasting panel to give us their general assessment of the wines and the evolution of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra.

María Isabel Mijares y García de Pelayo, founder and vice president of the Spanish Union of Tasters; vice president of the International Federation of Wine Journalists and Writers and member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Gastronomy; coordinator and director of the Repsol Guide of the Wines of Spain; founder and director of Equipo Team S.L.

"They have a very clear path, they have started by knowing the area well, the winemaker is aware that quality is in the vineyard; and it is a microclimate, that so differentiated soil, those inclinations to the sun of their terraces so different on the banks of the rivers. It has really been twinned with that heroic viticulture, it is not just a matter of landscape to surprise, it has begun to understand what that landscape supposes and those characteristics that are proper to the Ribeira Sacra. "

Víctor Cortizo Fontán, Representative of the Galician Association of Oenologists

"The reds have their own soul in Ribeira Sacra. Los Mencías de Ribeira Sacra come out of this standardization of wines, they have a lot of identity, very linked to the territory. They are wines that are defending theirs, we do not have to imitate anyone, we have a brutal potential with our variety that is very good, a land that gives a lot of work but produces these grapes of excellent quality. For me it is a positive handicap for Ribeira Sacra to have such a deeply rooted grape variety and such a good land to produce these high quality wines that do not need to imitate anyone, which gives them a very personal identity. "

Francisco Sauco Sánchez-Casas, President of the Extremadura Academy of Gastronomy, President of the Forum of Autonomous Academies of Gastronomy, Full Member of the Royal Academy of Gastronomy,
Member of National and International Tasting Juries.

"You have to teach how wine is cared for and elaborated here, as grape varieties support and monitor it, it seems to me that they have many other names to learn. They are truly teachers. And I in other tastings of other D.O. I always speak of this because I am convinced of the great work that is being done, the wine is being taken care of very much. "

Ana María Martín Abild, Sommelier for the Spanish School of Tasting, Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), Diploma in Tourism, Jury of various national and insular wine competitions, Co-owner of Winesoul Consulting.

"I'm still very much what happens internationally, I'm also studying the Wine & Spirit diploma in London and I follow the Master Sommeliers in the US and they talk a lot about Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands. They are two territories in Spain that are talked about a lot and that is very interesting. "
