The D.O. Ribeira Sacra presents 61 samples from 32 wineries at the "Mondial des Vins Extremes"

23/06/2022

The international competition organized by Cervim is held from July 14th to 15th in Valle d'Aosta, Italy. "Mondial des Vins Extremes" is part of Vinofed, the World Federation of Major International Wine Competitions and is the only competition in the world expressly dedicated to wines produced by heroic viticulture.

 The competition, which is open to wines produced in areas characterized by mountain or steeply sloping viticulture, constitutes a point of reference for wine producers in difficult areas. Its objective is to emphasize the unique characteristics of these products as well as to make consumers aware of the cultural aspects of mountain viticulture and the valuable work that winegrowers do to safeguard the territory and the environment and so that consumers can appreciate all this.

The criteria that the Denominations must meet in order for their wines to participate in the contest must be some of the following: altitude greater than 500 meters (except for systems on the highlands, slope of the land greater than 30% (in points of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra reaches 80%) or viticultural systems cultivated on terraces with an altitude greater than 500 meters, with the exception of systems in the highlands and vineyards cultivated on small islands.

Terraced vineyards in the D.O. Ribeira Sacra

The D.O. Ribeira Sacra is a world reference in heroic viticulture, a denomination that is reached due to orographic conditions that do not allow mechanization, small-sized vineyards usually organized on terraces; adverse weather conditions or/and because the vineyard is located in geographical areas with landscapes of great beauty and tourism character.

The 61 samples from 32 wineries of the D.O. Ribeira Sacra that participate in this edition of the contest enter to compete in the following categories: still white wines produced in the 2021 vintage; still white wines produced in the 2020 and previous vintages; still red wines produced in the 2020 and 2021 vintages; Still red wines produced in the 2019 and previous vintages and still rosé wines. Wines awarded in previous editions of the Mondial des Vins Extrêmes are not admitted. The participation increases with respect to last year, which were 53 samples from 27 wineries, and stands at a participation similar to that of 2020, which was 64.

Each wine entered in the Contest will be evaluated by a commission and the selected wines will receive:

  • Silver Medal: from 85 to 88.99 points;
  • Gold Medal: from 89 to 92.99 points;
  • Great Gold Medal: from 93 to 100 points.
