The D.O. Ribeira Sacra presented 33 samples at the XVI International Competition of Mountain Wines at Aosta, 29 were reds and 4 were whites, from 23 bodegas. The wines in the competition could compete in 10 categories, Ribeira Sacra entered 3 categories, reds from 07, whites from 07 and wines from grapes harvested in 05-06. In each category the wines judged to be the best by the jury received a gold, silver or bronze medal. There were also other prizes for the best wines, independent of category, as all wines that received more then 80 points out of a 100 received a special mention of honour, of these prizes Ribeira Sacra wines received 4: Cardenal Rodrigo do Castro (Bodega Soutelo, subregion of Amandi), San Mamed (Bodega de Rosa Mará Pumar, subregion Quiroga-Bibei), Regina Expressió (bodega Regina Viarum, subregion of Amandi) and Val do Frade (SAT Os Ermotaños, subregion Quiroga- Bibei).
Other prizes were awarded for the best wines from each country and in the case of Spain, the mountain wine chosen came from Adegas Moure from the subregion of Ribeiras do Miño, which received the Special Prize Cervim 2008.
The competition in Aosta is unique in that brings together all the wines in the world that are produced in regions with steep gradients, Ribeira Sacra has the majority of its production in this type of terrain and it has been coming for years to this Italian competition and always achieves great success.
