The friendliness and understanding in the different meetings

The D.O.R.S. completes its objectives with flying colours

20/03/2009

The plenary meeting of the C.R.D.O.R.S. dedicated its final days to holding several meetings in order to review the regulations of the D.O., and ensuring that any changes that need to be made are in place before July of this year.

In general, they will change some of the parameters of the analyses: the volatile acid content of the young wines has increased to 0.70 and in the aged wines to 1; the minimum alcohol content will be 12 per cent for aged wines and for the rest of the wines of the D.O. 11 per cent. According to European regulations the sulphur
content in red wines can be up to 140 and in white wines 170. There was agreement relating to the representation in the plenary meeting with a view to holding the
electoral process within two years: the bodegas that produce 65% of the wine will have 3 representatives, those that produce less than 14% will have 1 representative and the rest will have 2 representatives. The grape producers that do not sell the grapes will have 1 representative, grape producers that have more than one hectare of vineyards will have 2 representatives and those that have less than one hectare will have 3 representatives (as they constitute the majority of grape producers in
the D.O.)

A decision was made to create a commission with a one year time limit, that would make decisions on two areas: the entry of new areas to the D.O. (particular points from the councils of Monforte, Sober, Pantón, Pereiro de Aguiar and Coles) and to
create a new wine section for the wines that are characteristic of their area of production.

It will follow the general rule that specifies if a wine is a crianza, reserva or gran reserva. The crianza should have a minimum of 6 months aged in the barrel, the reserva 1 year and the gran reserva 2 years.

The outcomes of the meeting were made known by the President of the C.R.D.O.R.S., José Manuel Rodriguez and the Vice president of the C.R.D.O.R.S., Evaristo Rodriguez. It was highlighted in the press conference the friendliness and understanding in the different meetings, in view of the fact that in other D.O.s they have been undertaking this process for a year and still have not completed it.
According to the representatives of the C.R.D.O.R.S. there is a will to work together for the benefit of the D.O.
