The names of the prize-winning wines at the XVII International Competition of Mountain Wines, that takes place at Saint Vincent in Aosta, between the 2nd and the 4th of July are now known. The D.O. Ribeira Sacra was represented by 34 samples from 22 bodegas, the majority of the samples were red wines, with 6 being white wines. The 34 samples from the D.O. won 12 prizes.
In this competition there are 10 categories and the wines from the Ribeira Sacra compete in 3 of them:
1.-Still white wines produced from the 2008 harvest
2.-Still red wines produced from the 2008 harvest
3.-Still red wines produced from the 2007 and 2006 harvest
Each category has 3 prizes: premier gold medal, gold medal and silver medal. As well as these any wines that receive more than 80 points out of a 100 get a special mention of honour.
In the white wine category the following received a special mention of honour:
Almalarga 2008 from bodega Pena de las Donas S.L., subregion Ribeiras do Miño.
Viña Vella Diomondi from bodega S.A.T. Virxen dos Remedios, subregion Ribeiras do Miño.
The category of red wines from the 2008 harvest was the triumphal highlight for the D.O.
Ribeira Sacra took the premier gold medal for the wine Don Ramón from the bodega Don Ramón S.L. from the subregion Quiroga-Bibei, and the gold medal went to Cruceiro from the bodega of Ramón Marcos Fernández from the subregion of Amandi.
In this category the following also got special mentions of honour: Porvide from the bodega Manuel Mondelo RodrÃguez (subregion Quiroga-Bibei), Pradio from the bodega
Javier Seoane Novelle (subregion Chantada), San Mamed from the bodega of Rosa MarÃa Pumar (subregion Quiroga-Bibei), Val do Frade from the bodega S.A.T. Os Ermitaños
(subregion Quiroga-Bibei), Viña Regueiral from the bodega of José RodrÃguez Prieto (subregion Amandi) and Viña Vella Diomondi from the bodega S.A.T. Virxen dos
Remedios (subregion Ribeiras do Miño)
In the category of red wines produced from the 2007 and 2006 harvests Don Ramón 2007 from the bodega Don Ramón S.L. (subregion Quiroga-Bibei) received a special mention of honour.
The list of prize winners from the Denominación de Origen Ribeira Sacra this year is completed with Regina Viarum S.L. (subregion Amandi) winning the Special Prize of the Competition 2009. This is awarded to a bodega in each country in recognition of
the total points awarded for each of the different wines that a bodega presents.
On the 4th of September representatives from the C.R.D.O.R.S. will go to Aosta to collect the prizes which will reach their final destination at the Christmas meal
that is organised every year by the Regulatory Council.
