D.O. Ribeira Sacra is pleased that Ribeira Sacra goes one step further to become a World Heritage Site.

28/03/2020

UNESCO communicated this Friday to the Xunta that the candidacy of the Ribeira Sacra to be a World Heritage Site is one of the 24 proposals accepted for study at the 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

The universal value of this territory rests on two basic pillars; the cultural and architectural heritage it has, being the largest concentration of rural Romanesque in Europe and extreme or mountain viticulture that is carried out on the slopes in terraces, for which Ribeira Sacra also has international recognition through its wines, since from the primary sector, especially the wine-growing sector, Ribeira Sacra is presented as a living landscape, and an example of man's relationship with nature.

The President of CRDORS, José Manuel Rodríguez, expressed his satisfaction that Ribeira Sacra continues with a firm step towards its declaration as a World Heritage Site, “What has been worked on in the maintenance, conservation and dissemination of this territory receives rewards and we are pleased. In a moment of global crisis, how what we are experiencing, the recognition of the universal value of the Ribeira Sacra gives us, if possible, more motivation and drive. This is exciting news in difficult times.”
